Form and Vision

Form and Vision

FORM & VISION is a burst of visual energy which engages both the emotions and the intellect.

Artist/curator Terry Beard has invited a select group of artists to join her in revealing their core concerns. The result is an inventive and vigorous investigation into the human condition and the world we inhabit.

There is an astonishing breadth of subject matter on display here; identity and displacement, the way mind and body work in unison, how we connect within one another in the urban landscape, the shaping of the land over time, internal and geographic fault lines, the way that memories and dreams break into the presence of nature, invisible inner spaces and the symbolic and aesthetic value of insects are a few of the themes explored in this thought provoking and resonant exhibition.

Ceramics, painting and a variety of printmaking techniques feature in this two week show. Whatever your tastes and interests, there will be something here to catch your attention and activate your imagination.

WPBC Commission

WPBC commission

Worcester Park Baptist Church is celebrating 125yrs of worshipping, serving, sharing and growing together as a church community. For their anniversary I have been asked to create an art work that reflects the diverse community of the church and the church through the ages.  The community is a good mix of folks, some who have been members for generations and others who come from afar like Nigeria, Korea, Japan and myself from South Africa.  For this piece I want to capture the meaning of church life, that a church is the people not the building, the bonds that are formed, the activities and the support that one gets from being part of a church family growing in faith.

I spent a couple of weekends meeting, photographing and getting to know better the people of the church and collecting photos and stories to do with the history of the church and it’s members.

I have used the images to build the church as a collage and I will be adding text to the collage taken from relevant scriptures and literature connected with WPBC. It will be completed in time for the anniversary celebrations on the 6th of June.

Rev it Up! For Women's History Month

This has been a very interesting journey for me.  When I first started working on this project, in October last year, I had an idea to do something along the lines of generations, and the women in my life who have impacted and influenced me in my family history.  As I developed this idea it became about my Oma (grandmother) and my Omama (great grandmother) and their experience as internees in the Japanese war camps in what used to be The Dutch East Indies.

I spent a lot of time researching the subject and reading the stories of survivors of the camps and the war memoir written by my Omama.  I had always been impressed with how my Oma had coped in such circumstances.  She was only in her teens when war broke out and she had just made it into the Olympics as a swimmer but went to the camps instead.  She still got to swim, but for a far greater cause, through the sewers passing notes between the male and female camps.

I was struck by her courage and that of the other women who took risks to get medicine for fellow campees and the strength many of these women exhibited in such bleak circumstances that kept them hopeful and resilient.

My aim with 'Eve in Exile' is to capture that hope, resilience and courage that these women displayed.  There is something inspiring and transcendent about an unbroken spirit!

Christmas Wreath Workshop

Christmas Wreath Worskshop
Our Christmas Wreath Workshop on Saturday the 6th of December was a great afternoon.  Everyone enjoyed themselves drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows, hot spiced cordial, eating mince pies and of course making beautiful Christmas wreaths.  It was so much easier this year, instead of making the wreath rings by binding newspaper with wire, which is hard going on the hands, we used oasis rings and just stuck the foliage and decorations into the oasis.  It is so much easier and it will last longer because the oasis is soaked in water.  I always enjoy seeing all the different and creative things folks use to create their wreaths.  I certainly get lots of ideas! Enjoy your wreaths ladies.
